about the artist

Mike Geno is a professional artist living and working in Philadelphia. He has an active studio practice and exhibits nationally on a regular basis. In addition to working in his studio, Mike teaches at Moore College of Art & Design.

Degrees:

Masters of Fine Arts (painting & drawing) Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL

Bachelors of Fine Arts (painting & drawing) Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Phila, PA

I started painting portraits of pets in 2001, as a fun way to relate to my friends and colleagues that adored their pets. It offered a chance for me to paint a cherished subject and transcend it into fine art. In 2003 I was offered an opportunity to exhibit in a gallery in Philadelphia. I created the Pet Portrait Project to further combine the worlds of fine art and pet portraiture, which often did not relate. I simply painted over 50 pets from submitted photos mailed to me.

The experience itself was really fun. The effect on pet owners, incomparable.
